What makes a product "Best" in its category is defined by different people differently. For some people "best" is a free phone because they can't afford anything else. Some people pour over the specs and select the "best".

For me, "best" is the phone that operates the most intuitively to my way of thinking. I want something that I don't need to refer back to the manual to use its features. My Android Incredible came with a 8" x 11", 73 page manual that I need to use to operate the phone... that fact speaks volumes to what separates the Android from the "best."

or perchance your overall level of intelligence..?

Any normal person (i.e. with thumbs) can use Android or iOS well within a day.

I'm in the same boat (but upgrading from a 867MHz TiBook). I figure if there's no iMac introduced, I pull the trigger on getting a refurb iMac core duo.

So have you purchased refurbed from Apple previously? I've never done that, but I was wondering what your experience was like.

Could you bump that up if you called back and did the overnight gig?

    Just curious.

My friend (an apple employee) used his discount and ordered for me at the store. I don't think he ever asked me about shipping, I assumed it was standard for every consumer.

I can see an extra week to added on to throw in an extra gig and ship from China, not NINE days! Either way it will be here and in the meantime I'll HOPE FOR THE BEST, and expect yonah.

Assuming the goblin costs one point, let's say the villain does this:

    R1T1 Collect 1 point
R1T2 Collect 1 point, summon Goblin
    R2T1 Collect 1 point
    R2T2 Collect 1 point

Villain now has 3 points left, see?

you guys make the rules, so anything you decide, we play by.

but that is not as you described it before: the collection of a point was equivalent to an action, and cost a turn.
actions were presented as mutually exclusive to each other, and the villain has to make a strategic decision whether to wait, and get points or to do something, and use the points without accumulating more.. You made this very clear in several posts.

for any of his turns the villain can
1,2) summon and place a monster trap (provided he collected enough points) OR
    3) move OR
    4) heal OR
    5) collect point

if collecting point goes on all the time, regardless of other actions, than this should be clearly stated and not presented as an alternative.
this new interpretation makes a big difference, likely tens of points through the game.

But minor speed bumps is all they have to talk about.
It was the introduction of all these products that people keep referring to. IIRC, the MacBook, MacBook Pro, intel iMac, intel MacMini did not exist before January 1, 2006. All of these products were released in this calendar year.

If Apple was found to be abusing its position... yes. But this is NOT my point, my point was 'countries start to investigate Apple due to a shortage of components due to Apple buying up the available stock for a prolonged period of time'. This is very different from Apple being found guilty etc etc.

    Abusing what position.

    Its simple supply and demand.

NOTHING is stopping RIM from going to the manufacturers and offering MORE money than Apple. NOTHING.

On the other side, the manufacturers cannot make enough panels to keep up with Apple (Apple's customers) demand for the panel (the iPad).

In any business if you want more of something quicker when it is in limited supply the cost is going to go up.

It has nothing to do with abusing market position.

It is funny the same people who would have blasted Apple to the moon for doing something like this not only don't call Amazon out on it, but actually blame Apple for it.

    It is silly yet predictable.

I get the feeling they are not really making any money on it, so it would make sense to give it away as a benefit of "using a mac."

Huh? If they aren't making any money for it now (with relatively few people paying for the service) how would it make sense to give it away for free (with many many more people not paying for it?)

I for one use it ALL the time. When you have more than one device (multiple macs, iphone), it's SO nice to have them sync wirelessly, immediately, and without having to login every time, on the native apps. iCal, Contacts, Safari links: I am a very frequent user of the mobileme syncing on all of these.

Mac Pro and Xserve have the Xeon (Woodcrest).
MacBook Pro, MacBook, and iMac will be upgraded to the Core 2 Duo (Merom).
Mac Mini will probably keep the Core Duo (Yonah).

I agree except I think they will put Conroe in the iMac.

Apple's newest and greatest always has high prices, then they will come down.

With the Gx range, this didn't happen as IBM rarely changed their prices.

Welcome to the new Intel world where prices change on a monthly basis.

Remember when the Mac Mini were introduced?

First they were quite expensive, then prices came down within a few weeks.

I can't remember when the next Intel price drop is expected - someone tell us please? (probably in about 2 or 3 months time - Octoberish.)

...obviously, is the rollout of a "Kindle Tablet" running Honeycomb.

The custom Amazon front end would have icons for:

Kindle Reading App (and Kindle Store)
Amazon Music Player (with cloud storage) and MP3 Store
Amazon Prime Streaming Video (and the Amazon Video Store)
    Amazon Android App Store
    Cloud Storage Manager
    Some sort of Web Browser

And underneath that is Honeycomb. Maybe they throw in a free Amazon Prime subscription with purchase (free 2-day shipping on Amazon purchases).

Here would be Amazon leveraging all their strengths into a physical device that could seriously challenge the iPad in ways that no other vendor can, because it creates an Amazon "ecosystem" with the worlds biggest store for physical goods attached.

    People like to shop.

I didn't quite read the whole thread, and I've seen people trying to present definitive answers representing multiple possible answers. While I don't claim to be an end all source, math is one thing that I can do and do understand.

I was tempted not to post, but, I think understanding the order of operations (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Order_of_operations)/etc is something that is relatively important.

    Multiple people have quoted the order : P(arenthes) E(xponents) M(ultiplication) D(ivision) A(ddition) S(ubtraction).

As stated, that is NOT totally accurate. Multiplication and division are the same operation, as are addition and subtraction. Thus, the order between them can be flipped. That is, P E D M A S is true, as is P E D M S A, as is P E M D S A.

If multiplication and division both appear you go from LEFT to RIGHT.

    Parenthesis are implied multiplication.

So, first, in the parenthesis we have 12, so, 48/2(12). As that is written, one does 48/2=24*12. So, as the problem is written, the answer is 288. While the method of writing the problem is certainly not the best, the problem does, to my knowledge, only have one true answer.

An important note: not all calculators correctly apply the orders of operations. Any scientific calculator form the last 5 years or so should, and if it is outputting anything other then 288 I would be interested in knowing. Some pocket calulators with + - x just go left to right.

Wolfram is, as usual, right. (http://www.wolframalpha.com/input/?i=48%2F2%289%2B3%29)
Well written answer. If Wolfram Alpha says 288 then that's the answer.

I guarantee America has all the technology required to make components for a phone battery.

And yes, I'd pay more for EVERYTHING I buy if I knew that an American was making it here in America. That means more people working fair-wage jobs, paying taxes, and contributing to the economy by spending THEIR money in the economy as well.

Problem is, as I said before, Apple sells worldwide. And most of the world couldn't possibly care less if a product is made in the USA or in Japan. We want it to be as good as it is now, at the best price. America can't do that, can it? Prince increase = sales decrease.

[url="http://semiaccurate.com/2011/05/05/apple-dumps-intel-from-laptop-lines/"]SemiAccurate claims (http://www.macrumors.com/2011/05/06/apple-to-move-from-intel-to-arm-processors-in-future-laptops/) to have heard that Apple will be transitioning from Intel processors to ARM processors in the not too distant future.

    Interesting rumour.

I heard the other way around, that Apple will be using Intel as its main processor manufacturer (http://www.winbeta.org/?q=news/intel-build-next-generation-processor-ios-devices) for the iPad,iPod Touch, and iPhone, and will more than likely make that switch within the next year.

Reasons may be because of the ongoing lawsuits between Apple and Samsung, which they currently use.

I heard it enough, that it even got slashdotted (http://apple.slashdot.org/story/11/05/03/1357202/Intel-To-Build-Next-Gen-Processor-For-iOS-Devices).

So why go the exact opposite for the laptops when they would still be with Intel for their other devices? It would make better sense to standardize across the board.

    BL.

The entire idea of restoring from a Time Machine backup has always been illogical to me.

If Time Machine backs up everything, then it backs up whatever problems you had that resulted in your need for restore.

Time Machine has limited real use, and its basically limited to accidentally deleting things.

Use TM for your Home Folder and things like that. Even Apps. You can always reinstall and update an OS. Don't bother TMing your OS.

Indeed, which is why I also do a Carbon Copy Clone once in a while. Most people, for some reason, just use Time Machine. Maybe they never have encountered a catastrophic disk failure. Seems like a big risk to take.

I use CCC but only to clone my external iTunes media drive to a clone of it set, incremental of course, so if anything gets deleted, the clone doesn't delete it. But I TM by internal drive to a separate drive.

Internal 750 - OS, Apps, Docs, Photo Library, etc.
External 2 TB - iTunes media drive - all movies, iOS Apps, Music, etc. Everything iTunes.
External 2 TB - incremental clone of iTunes drive.
External 750 - TM of internal drive.

External 2 TB - Offsite, monthly backup of iTunes drive and TM drive. Because if there is a house fire or something, I have all the media, esp. photos and home movies on a safe backup.

Well, I've recently heard some speculation about a smart device from Apple to go along with the consumer device and if Palm is hearing the same whispers, I'd think it would be a bit concerning. However, Palm just introduced the Treo 680p, so it may not matter as much, once that has been deployed on various carriers' networks.

Yeah, I have too, but I don't buy it, really. If you look at Apple's products aimed at professionals/businesses, they're exclusively either Macs or software/software houses they've acquired. I don't think Apple is likely to break with the success it has had offering consumer hardware like the iPod. The iTV will follow in that tradition.

For the record, I really like PalmOS. It does what it's supposed to do very well. What concerns me is the way the companies (or have they reamalgamated now?) are being led in a strange direction - the move to Windows Mobile looks to me like Palm/Palmsource trying to hedge their bets rather than properly marketing what they have had going for them all these years. Time will tell whether it's a good business decision, and whether the PalmOS survives at all. I, for one, hope that it does.

If I remember correctly, Palm software and products were originally developed by a group of ex-Apple employees, weren't they? I think they're the same faction that struck out for a bit by starting Handspring (later brought back into the fold).

Ok...and the MSRP for that phone would be 800 bucks with a 10 year contract with cingular.

People need to realize that apple products are somewhat overpriced so I can see a great apple phone with great features but with a contract the phone is going to be extremely expensive.

Nokia already has phones (their N series (http://www.nokia.com/nseries/index.html?lang=en&country=US#product,n93)) capable of 640x480 30fps vid at $800 unlocked. I don't see an Apple Phone with these capabilities being THAT much more and certainly cheaper if Apple is the provider for the phone service as some people are speculating.

What do you guys think, should we wait or go ahead and buy from somewhere else. Or just wait fo Magellans car kit?

Hard call. I like the idea that I would not have to remove my case to use the Magellan, but that's all I like about the look of it. It looks cheaper to me and I'm guessing we would be waiting until the end of January, or later, before the price would start to drop from $130. From viewing the many Youtube videos on the TomTom car kit it seems pretty great for $90.

Would make sense. Intel's x86 chips serve many masters, most of them not Apple. None of them are optimized for X, let alone iOS. Most of them at the high end are designed for servers and the like, not tablets and laptops. Apple would rather see that precious silicon - and the power it consumes - reserved for things they find important. Not for what Steve Ballmer thinks is important. Or some HP server boffin.

In contrast, Apple designs their own ARM chips now, getting exactly what they want.

I could see this happening. Apple switches their whole product lineup to ARM chips that it designs in house . . .

And that it has Intel manufacture, since Intel is the best fab operation in the world.

You'd think they'd want maybe to put more capabilities into expanding the GPU power to help with OpenCL and GCD - we'll see, but wouldn't a Mac Pro mountable rack or a new Xserve version want this?

    Hell yeah..

It seemed like a cogent point to me. Your perspective will change if you do any number of things. Bet on horse races for a living and you'll never look at a horse in the same way that other people do.

    Earlier itcheroni said ...

Now I don't mean to be cruel, but he isn't making anything, creating anything or contributing anything to society through this livelihood. He's merely siphoning off the flow. And he wants to talk about perspective? It seems to me that making a living that way is guaranteed to give you a warped perspective.

    It's a perspective I'm glad I don't share.

Sure he is. He is creating liquidity in a financial market. He is the grease in the financial cogs. Just because you do not understand how a process works is no excuse to be dismissive of it.
