That has nothing to due with quality. It's due to low manufacturing costs.
And in many cases making software or services requires more brainpower and sophistication than making a physical product. Japan has yet to produce a world-class software company outside of video games.
So this "American products are low quality" argument just doesn't hold water any way you look at it.

And anyway, Apple sells lots and lots of computers/iPhones/iPads etc. in Asia, so why on earth shouldn't those countries expect that if they can do a better job building them, then Apple should build them there?

The old Macfanclub hating the gamer , we have heard it before. There isnt any reason Macs cant game. You buy a thousand or two thousand machine it should be able to game. Mini cant.............Powermac is pure Overkill workstation. A gigantic hole for sure. Here's to the Mac gamers ! My Mac-using son had a Windows trojan on his memory stick, which he uses at school-- the trojan probably loaded itself there. Its presence was identified by a Windows-using friend's malware scanner when he plugged the stick into his machine. I investigated later: scanned it with fully-up-to-date ClamXAV on my Mac. Clam didn't find anything. So, I downloaded Sophos and let it install it per its defaults. Scanned the stick again, and Sophos alerted me to the issue. It also had links to informative pages on the trojan in question. Turns out it's a Windows-only trojan; at no point were our Macs in danger. But every PC user among my son's friends was at risk from it. It was a nasty one, too, and known for stealing passwords and so forth.
So based on that one test, it seems Sophos is superior to Clam. I've noted no problem running it on my machine so far. Scanning my hard disk, for example, didn't bog the machine down much.
I think I'll keep it. Clam would not automatically scan incoming emails or other potential sources of contagion; Sophos will do so. Given there appears to be little or no performance or stability hit, it seems worthwhile.

This just makes me more interested to hear what Apple has come up with. I like the idea of "the cloud" but I'd definitely like to compare Amazon's with Apple's when it is announced in June.

GL on getting people to start making ARM binaries for windows 8 which only runs on tablets who happen to be extremely unsuccessful. If Microsoft makes an ARM version of windows 8 for tablets only, then windows-based tablets will be even deader than they are already.
On a side note: All current ARM processers are designed for very compact and tight spaces where power efficiency is THE most important thing. Regular laptop/desktop CPUs are not, to the same extent anyway. ARM has yet to show us what it can deliver in that area, so who knows. We'll just have to wait and see.

I have nearly 20 years of professional experience using Imperial units as a mechanical engineer, as does every mechanical engineer in the U.S. Switching systems (or, rather, making it mandatory) will require all of these engineers to re-learn the formulae they've known and used for decades. That's the equivalent of millions of man-years of engineering experience down the drain. That isn't progress, no matter how much you might want want to believe it is.

I dont understand the point of this. Is storage really an issue on peoples computers? I understand the mobile app, but why not just store the files locally?
I believe that storage will be half the equation for the future MobileMe. I believe the other half will be some sort of wireless synching to the cloud - if you so choose - and not to your computer as we've done for too many years now.

I'm really surprised Apple would wait an additional 3 months to update their phone. It seems like this market is getting more competitive by the quarter, and giving the competition another 3 months to catch up just seems like a bad idea.
Especially when the update isn't even that big. It would be one thing if this was an entirely new design.
Maybe the delay is entirely related to the Japanese earthquake.

Due to the fact that the airport base station and the isight have been dropped from the apple store in the UK because of euro regulations.. I think these will both receive an update.
So Predication 1
Airport base station with built in dsl modem. To compete with the dlinks and belkins of this world.. I think the most difficult part of using a mac is getting it connected to the net. So it makes sense for apple to have a plug and play adsl modem with all the printer sharing and itunes remote speaker support.
Prediction 2
The continued integration of iSight into the line-up, so I expect to see iSight cinema screens, I also expect to see a 17inch screen to complement the mac mini with a built in iSight. iChat will receive an update with Leopard for VOIP and more integration with everything else.. There maybe a bigger screen, but I don't think this will happen.. There maybe an iSight replacement too which will have a much smaller form factor and will be usb, not firewire.

No iPod announcements apart from increased sizes for the nano

New Mac Pros with the same case, but with a slot loading front and bigger HD capacities and maybe more ports on the back. All intel pimped.

Wrong... Apple didn't invent the concept of the touch UI, they bought most of what they have and own very little rights to it.

I just don't really see how anyone should be surprised. It should be totally obvious to anyone who watches the smart phone market that Android would easily surpass IOS--they are indeed everywhere and I'm sure when it comes time to get a new phone--those with no preconceived ideas on what they want will walk out of the store with some kind of Android. Most who go in looking for an iPhone will probably leave with one. As long as Apple--and their shareholders are happy, I don't think it really matters.

All of these September iPhone rumors leave three possibilities:
1) Apple failed to plug all of its leaks and there are genuine sources providing this information, and as a result, the iPhone 5 will really be out in September.
2) Apple is intentionally testing the waters to not only see where remaining leaks are, but also to encourage iPhone 4 sales to not drop off during the late spring/early summer.
3) The original September rumor began from an untested source and spent enough time on the merry-go-round to be viewed as "legitimate" by larger media outlets.
