Not even sure how much benefit the second core confers in an application like office anyway. What it means is that the top of the range mac now available runs the application as well as the same place/priced machine from 1 year ago, make of that what you will.

    Here's my reckoning.

It's running an application that was never built to run on X86 processors at comparable speeds to the processors on which the program was built to run.

That's damned impressive if you ask me. Even before when it was slow it was still amazing to me, especially after the deathly slow experience that was Virtual PC on the Mac. Sure, it was emulating an entire OS but the decrease in speed was massive - a 2GHz G5 became a 733MHz PIII under Virtual PC...

If Apple does want to go MVNO, it makes perfect sense to chose cingular. They have the largest digital network in the U.S... perfect for downloads...

    Here comes the iPhone..

Cingular sucks. If Apple goes with them, it will be a huge mistake.

7 weeks till our Cingular contract's up!

Exactly the government, you don't have to give something up because some school principal told you. Two completely different situations.

You are right, you don't... However, you could be escorted off the property by the police and then suspended. Is that worth it?

Contrary to previous reports (http://www.macrumors.com/pages/2006/11/20061109011718.shtml), Justin Long writes on his website that he is still making 'Get a Mac' commercials for Apple (http://www.justinlong.net/ubbthreads7/ubbthreads.php?ubb=showflat&Number=9155&page=1#Post9155). In addition, Long adds that he is currently filming some "holiday spots" for Apple. Readers may remember that Apple has previously done holiday-themed ads during their "switch" campaign with Will Ferrell as Santa Claus (http://www.macrumors.com/pages/2002/11/20021125172305.shtml).

as for the mac commercials, i don't know where that report came from that said i wasn't going to do anymore - i literally setting my alarm right now to wake up for a mac shoot tomorrow - if i'm not doing anymore i guess i can sleep in on my day off - that'd be nice. but yeah, we're doing some holiday spots now which i think will be pretty funny - not nearly funny enough to justifiy the money they're paying me though, i'll be honest with you. as for the future, i really don't know what i'm going to do - i'm surprised, frankly, that the campaign hasn't become tired and they've just ended it on their own - but i try to live as much in the present as i can considering the future doesn't exist, i'm not really sure. they're easy to do, i love john (the pc guy) and working with him is so effortless and fun that i definitely wouldn't rule out doing some more - and, as i said, they pay us nicely. i don't know - all of this is such unchartered territory for me that i'm just kind of holding on to my seat and hope i don't fall off anytime soon.

My brief experience report (German-language) with a little video clip (http://rossau.wordpress.com/2009/10/02/fernsehen-am-iphone-mit-eyetv/): A realtime and uncut demonstration of "Live TV" on two different Wi-Fi networks: EyeTV hybrid tuner stationary on the Mac and the iPhone in the caf (as the background noise clearly reveals). As far as I know the first opportunity for watching "Live TV" on the iDevice outside of north america.

From the interview I got the feeling that the inside of the machine will be just the same as the current models.

Kinda like the black macbook is the same as the white macbook, but with a bigger hard drive.

You know what? It's just Microsoft just trying to turn a profit...I think this may have really been a bad move on Microsoft's part...Having multiple SKUs isn't a great idea either...I think Sony's got some brownie points for moving towards just one SKU, the "elite" 60 GB PS3.

Hi Jim, in theory what you're wanting to do "shouldn't" pose a problem. You may have to get it done at an actual ATT store though. BestBuy uses a propitiatory system to do all of our phone transactions and account management. While the system we use does allow us the capability to do what you are wanting, the people using it will more than likely not know how to do it. Unless you go to a pretty decent store (a higher revenue band), chances are the mobile associates will not have been trained to do these things.

For example, when the 3GS first came out, they were completely unaware that I could purchase it for early upgrade for only 199 or 299, since it was the special iPhone early upgrade. They were turning away clients left and right because they only knew how to sell the iPhone to new clients. They didn't even realize they had the ability to sell someone an iPhone who was still under the 2 year contract for an extra 200 dollars, they were just turning people away.

I would suggest calling your local store and asking speak to either the BestBuy mobile manager, or whomever has the most seniority in the mobile department. If they give you a straight answer then you should be good, if not, then they haven't been properly trained and there's little they will be able to do for you.

That's what I was afraid of, but thank you nonetheless for confirming that the fears are valid -- I'm sure the store is one of the best, it was a pilot for the BB/Magnolia concept when it opened a few years ago (Sterling, VA), but I'll probably just pre-order at the Apple Store and save the coupon for something else. Thanks again for the info!

I did. That's why I was at Apple. Problem still exists. Had dropped calls with this one today. Can't imagine not having an iPhone. Wait to see what will be announced. I would likely go back to 3GS with iOS4.

Do you keep dropping calls when you hold it with your left hand (lower left corner of your phone)? If so, then why do you insist on holding your phone that way when you know for a fact that it's the reason why you keep dropping calls?

While you're waiting for Apple to come up with a fix (if ever they come up with one), why don't you hold it in a way so it doesn't drop your calls...

    Little update.

JoyRide is quite fun. Menu system is rubbish though. But the game itself works surprisingly well. There's a lot of leniency built into it to accommodate the motion controls. Graphics are clean, shatp and colourful. The ovefly leniency controls prevents it being a frustration festival. But like I say menu system is pants.

Kinnect Sports is fun and frantic. Enjoy the bowling - it's certainly as fun as Wii Bowling so I can see it being a party game winner. Table tennis is awesome too.

What I like about most Kinnect games so far is Avatar support. It is long overdue since Microsoft introduced them.

Of all the Kinect games the biggest criticism is with the menu system. Only Dance Central has got it spot on - intuitive & responsive.

No - Your Steam games can be downloaded whenever you like to whatever computer you are using.

So, if your Mac crashes and you wipe the HDD, you reinstall Steam and re-download for free.

Or, if you migrate to a Windows box, reinstall Steam and re-download for free.

    Buy once, play anywhere.

I'll even go up you on how awesome Steam is! Don't forget SteamPlay.

I have a gaming PC and a Mac, and I can play any cross platform game on either platform with ONE copy of the game! If I had a third Mac or Pc in the mix, so be it. Astoundingly awesome. Every time I quit / save my game on one computer, I can pick up where I left off on the other. I can't put enough emphasis on how awesome that is.

And you never lose your game or get stiffed with a "digital backup fee" to re-download your game. You can download them as much as you want. Hell, I upgraded my gaming PC 3 times in 6 years and each time I re-downloaded Halflife-2.

My office doesn't allow personal equipment in the building for the same reasons.

Sort of stupid since 20% of the people probably bring in iPhones, which is to say tiny computers that can access their network.

GM’s Plans for Chevy Volt Profitability (http://gm-volt.com/2010/12/02/gms-plans-for-chevy-volt-profitability/)

I'll match that with Who Killed The Electric Car (http://http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Who_Killed_the_Electric_Car%3F), and why. ;)

Where would we be today, if the lawmakers had not relented on the Clean Air Standards at that time, and the EV1 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/General_Motors_EV1) had continued to develop?

The film deals with the history of the electric car, its modern development, and commercialization.

The film focuses primarily on the General Motors EV1, which was made available for lease mainly in Southern California, after the California Air Resources Board passed the ZEV mandate in 1990 to combat urban air pollution.

Nearly 5000 electric cars were designed and manufactured by GM, Toyota, Honda, Ford, Nissan, and Chrysler; and then later destroyed.

Also discussed are the implications of the events depicted for air pollution, oil dependency, Middle East politics, and global warming.

The film details the California Air Resources Board's reversal of the mandate after relentless pressure and suits from automobile manufacturers, continual pressure from the oil industry, orchestrated hype over a future hydrogen car, and finally the George W. Bush administration.

A portion of the film details GM's efforts to demonstrate to California that there was no consumer demand for their product, and then to take back every EV1 and dispose of them. A few were disabled and given to museums and universities, but almost all were found to have been crushed.

GM never responded to the EV drivers' offer to pay the residual lease value ($1.9 million was offered for the remaining 78 cars in Burbank before they were crushed).

Several activists, including actresses Alexandra Paul and Colette Divine , are arrested in the protest that attempted to block the GM car carriers taking the remaining EV1s off to be crushed.

The film explores some of the motives that may have pushed the auto and oil industries to kill off the electric car. Wally Rippel offers, for example, that the oil companies were afraid of losing their monopoly on transportation fuel over the coming decades; while the auto companies feared short term costs for EV development and long term revenue loss because EVs require little maintenance and no tune-ups.

Others explained the killing differently. GM spokesman Dave Barthmuss argued it was lack of consumer interest due to the maximum range of 80–100 miles per charge, and the relatively high price.

The film also showed the failed attempts by electric car enthusiasts trying to combat auto industry moves, and save the surviving vehicles. Towards the end of the film, a deactivated EV1 car #99 is found in the garage of Petersen Automotive Museum, with former EV sales representative, Chelsea Sexton, invited for a visit.

The film also explores the future of automobile technologies including a deeply critical look at hydrogen vehicles, an upbeat discussion of plug-in hybrids, and examples of other developing EV technologies such as the Tesla Roadster (released on the market two years after the film).

I was also choosing between the 11 and 13 back in December. My reasons for the 13 was that I was coming from a 15-inch 2007 MBP and I thought going down to the screen size of the 11 was too drastic. Plus, the 13 has the same resolution as that MBP. However, the portability of the 11 was tempting.

What I did was get my wife an 11 for Christmas to replace her 2006 MacBook. She wanted that size anyway. Then I tried using it a few times. At work I'm the Mac Support Tech, so any new Mac passes through me for setup and configuration. The company bought a few 13-inch MBA's so I was able to use those, too.

After comparing the experience with both sizes, I chose the 11. The screen size wasn't a problem for me since I only use it for e-mail and Web browsing. The size and weight are also great and I take the MBA to the office instead of my MBP. Great for traveling, too.

I think the 11 is a great 2nd Mac. My MBP is still my primary Mac for more intensive tasks. In thinking of the 11 as a secondary Mac, it's perfect for me. If I wanted to replace my MBP, then I would prefer the 13.
