It's always the next "event" apple holds. Oh, I swear it's coming! I just know it! That powerbook g5 is coming, I can smell it. :p
Not to jump on your claim, because everyone has been making the comparison, but there is a bit of a difference. It was well known the G5 was a large, power hungry furnace and we had seen no evidence of a successful miniaturization. We were waiting on engineers to overcome a pretty difficult set of problems.
This time, there is already a chip. It's in machines. Even Apple machines. I could touch it, look at it, even use it in other models. Never was this the case with a mobile G5.

The apple phone should be similar to the Sony P900 series, in that they are unlocked and work with any GSM phone. I don't think any store, Cingular, T-Mobile, etc. do not sell through the stores. You have to buy from Sony or elsewhere.
I had a P900 phone before the Treo 650 and it worked fine with Cingular.
Bring on a phone that can sync with ease and feel of Apple OS, so I don't have to rely on Palm, not that is that bad.

Another thought... if this rumor is true, wouldn't this be a great time to buy stock in ARM?
About the ARMH stock not necessarily MANY positive bullish things are already priced into the stock price. ARM is trading at a P/E Ratio of about 105 and that's AFTER a recent pullback of 10% or so. That came out of the blue. Running current applications on the next Rosetta would probably mean a negligible loss in speed. It does not matter, as native software will be iOS based and there is a thriving market for those already.
It all brings back memories of the PPC days. Apple must be confident about their ability to keep up with advancements by Intel and AMD. Considering the pace the iPad and iPhone processors have been getting upgraded I would guess that they can do it.

No way. Intel is fantastic, their CPUs are nearly unmatched, and while Intel itself can be finicky sometimes, it's not worth the headache of transitioning again. Not unless ARM has some amazing crap up it's sleeve that will de-rail all of Intel's market share. This rumor makes sense on some low end laptops, maybe, but the entire lineup? Hell no. Plus I've gotten used to being able to run Windows in Boot Camp.
It's taken Apple over a decade to get where we are now. Why would they throw all that away? Not to mention that ARM has absolutely nothing that comes even slightly close to even mid-range Intel chips. And even in two years time, I'm very doubtful.

Admittedly, I didn't read the article posted by rdowns, but from reading the quotes he put in the OP, I'd have to say I disagree somewhat with your comments. Sure, we should all be working together, but the point is that those who are making the most are not paying at the same share/percentage as those who are lower or middle income.
Is it fair and in line with "everyone chipping in" if the person making $50,000 a year has to pay 20+% of their income, but the person making $1,000,000 a year only has to pay 16%?
Additionally, let's not forget that there is a lot of tension between "everyone chipping in" and the select few who make the decisions about how what has been "chipped in" gets spent. I have no problem doing my part to pay taxes as I do benefit from roads, schools, etc., but I do have a problem with a lot of the wasteful ways in which tax money is spent. I'm not saying that the iPhone will be a sure-fire hit. In fact, I fully expect a lot of Apple fans to be disappointed with the first revision.

No, but 1.8 is a big difference when it comes to taking a baby's temperature or figuring out if your meat is done just right. For a child, 99 is considered a mild fevor and is 37.22. 98.6 is considered "normal" and is 37 flat in C. However, if you had a mother trying to keep track of her child's fever over a period of time, the small variations between those two temps would be a lot more important. The total variation between 99, 99.5, and 100 F is so small on the C scale (37.22, 37.5, 37.77) that it's a lot easier to make mistakes in recording or reporting the results. Sure it's easy to do when it's your job in a professional setting, but lay people make mistakes all the time. Using a scale that makes the number differences larger (and psychologically significant, because you can bet no mother is going to forget that her child has a fever of 100) helps reduce those errors.
First of all, using two decimal places is not necessary for recording a baby's temperature, Fahrenheit or Celsius. 37.2 C is equivalent to 98.96 F, and 37.22 C is equal to 98.996 F. That would be nice, but it seems unlikely. Apple seem to consider the black MacBook the small "professional" laptop. Maybe it'll get a descrete GPU though, that would be pretty good, no?
This could happen, too...a new MB with better GPU for the "quasi-pro" users...the rest is OK with the MB, I think...but with backlit keyboard would be even better.

Surely we should not interpret everything following the first division symbol as belonging in the denominator, including an additional fraction. As Wolfram Alpha interpreted, I intended for my equation to be read as:

This question is using this notation only because MR forums aren't good for writing equations. We must think of this in our heads as being a fraction, and ask how it would be written, and your's makes the most sense.

I doubt Apple would waste their time on a tablet. The market has proven that there is little demand for them.
I add another vote for "before the iPod, the market proved worthless for mp3 players". I use a PDA and have used tablets briefly in the past and have to say they have their place. For me, it's PDAs all the way, especially when I see the Samsung Q1 and how clumsily put together that was. Let Apple loose and we may see something in that form factor worth getting.
It could open them back up for that market too, and who also remembers the rumours and/or video of the multi-touch screen that surfaced a while back, and it was suggested Apple were behind it? Stepping stones? I wouldn't like to see the Newton name again, whatever the product. It would be great to see it, but would feel too much like looking back. A device already exists that does the work of a tablet PC - its called an iBook.
IF you want a really cheap tablet - try pen and paper.

In 5-10 years the iPod will become extinct. By then the touch will be hanging on a thin wire.
I really do see this happening, it'll give way to the smartphone revolution. But, arguably, the pre-teen market will need it...
