there are some nice clear gel bumpers on the web if you search for them. The clear one looks especially good on a white iphone.

I could also gouge my eyes out, but it's not really a solution.

You can suppress the display of smilies if you're willing to suppress the display of other images too. This is done by unchecking the Show Images checkbox in your User Options (http://forums.macrumors.com/profile.php?do=editoptions). If you do this then images won't display and you'll see URLs instead.
There isn't a setting to disable smilie displays and leave other types of images.
You can disable the interpretation of the ASCII codes for smilies when you post but you can't disable the display of smilies that other users insert into their posts:
If you check the Disable smilies in text checkbox when you post then the characters :) will be treated as regular text.
If you don't then the characters :) will come out as http://images.macrumors.com/vb/images/smilies/smile.gif.

If I recall correctly, that system has 64-bit, 33MHz PCI slots, not PCI-X. I believe the first machine to have PCI-X was the 1.8GHz G5.
Oh! You're correct. PCI!!!

Yes, it'll open up the default browser and navigate to the particular page.

If anyone comes here looking for an answer to something similar, I solved my issue to my satisfaction.
Looking back over what I did, I noticed I hadn't compiled ffmpeg with libfaac enabled. After doing so, I find that the following converts the mts to mp4 with 160kb/s aac audio (the ac3 source is 192kb/s), no distortion:
ffmpeg -i <file>.mts -vcodec copy -ab 160k <file>.mp4
Since it's just a point-and-shoot camera, I realized I'm not missing much converting from ac3 to aac, so a single aac audio stream is good enough.

Autistic kids dont need a freaking iPad to learn. Especially not ASD patients.
I am one, and I have come along way according to many doctors ive seen.
The main issue is telling kids that they will never get better and not pushing them.
People used to say id never be able to talk, yet i live on my own, go to school, and have a well-paying job.
Now can people stop the crap, and give these kids the treatment they really need?
-gosh.
/end rant

After you run Trim The Fat, check out the G4 optimized MPlayer in this thread (http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=1129727), and you should definitely check out TenFourFox (http://www.floodgap.com/software/tenfourfox/), a specifically tuned version of Firefox for G3 and G4 Macs. And you should also look into MacTubes (http://www.macupdate.com/app/mac/28608/mactubes) to play Youtube videos better.
I don't know how much video you'll be able to play on those older Macs, but TenFourFox is an excellent browser for them.
