I'm sure this question has been beaten to hell by now, but why once more? I currently own a late 2008 15" C2D 2.4ghz 4gb 500gb HDD unibody that I bought as a refurb in early 2009. I'm in architecture grad school and use it for CAD/design work while at school and occasional gaming/web surfing while home. When at home, I do all CAD/design on the desktop.
Reasons I want to upgrade: Bootcamp CAD/Rendering is unbearable, gaming is okay but it gets super hot, and I can't stand a conventional HDD anymore after switching all my other computers over to SSD and i'd like to up the ram a little.
Option 1:
So I can sell the 2008 for about 1k and buy a 2011 refurb this summer for approx. 1.5k and then add a SSD for 150. So the upgrade will cost me $700 about.
Option 2:
Just upgrade to a SSD and add an additional 4gb of memory to the 2008 and make do until 2012, when I plan to upgrade to a MBA for portability since I wont be doing design anymore and can get by with a 13"
My question is, are the new i processors and graphics cards going to give me noticeable performance increases for my uses or will upgrading the 2008 solve the majority of my problems?

I have an issue wherein sometimes when I pick my phone up after it has been laying around sleeping, the phone won't jump from 3G to WiFi like it usually does but it will stay on 3G. When I go into settings WiFi is definitely "on" but the phone isn't picking up any WiFi networks. It tries and tries and the spinning circle keeps going but it never finds anything. Even flicking WiFi on and off doesn't help. I have to turn the phone itself off and back on for it to finally pick up WiFi again. This has happened twice since I got the phone on launch day. Very annoying. My black one never did that.

When i moved from Netbeans to Coda all i really missed was the code completion for Rails and PHP. However now that Netbeans is dropping Rails i would have had to move anyway.

I have recently aquired a Macintosh Plus, it's in need of all sorts of repairs which I wonder if you guys can help with. I'm new to these old Macs so go easy! The good news is I'm good at electronics and monitors so if you need your PSU/ Monitor sorting, call me, anyway to my Mac.
1. I have no floppies for the Mac, I somehow need to figure out how to get say OS 6.08 into the machine. I am not 100% sure if the 800k drive works. I have assumed the Mac+ boots from floppy.
2. Can I boot from CDrom? Could I compile a CDrom on my XP-PC that I can use in an Apple CD-300i Plus cdrom drive on scsi? From what I've seen a special CDrom driver needs to be obtained which is one step after booting from floppy.
3. My ultimate objective is to find Alchemy and Infinity software as I want to connect the Mac+ to an old piece of musical kit I have (a sampler) and this is the only setup that works, so I'm told. Anyone know where I might find a copy of Alchemy?
Thanks in advance.1) the only way to see if the floppy drive works is to try and boot a disk, witch you will need another mac with a floppy drive to write, as i see you are England if you are willing to pay a small fee i could write you some system 6 floppy's
2) you can boot from a cd but it has to be in mac hfs and written with the rite version of apples cdrom driver
3) i will have a look and see if i have those programs but i don't think i have it, maybe you can find them on the internet

I have about 80gigs left on my Macbook Pro, but I have about 100gigs of raw footage that needs to be edited. I tried putting them on an external hard drive and importing direct from there, but FCP doesn't even recognize that the hard drive is in there. It is FAT formatted and everything.
If FCP has to access it, the external HDD has to be formatted with "Mac OS Extended (HFS+)", as FAT32 is not supported by FCP and even has a file size limit of 4GB (per file).
Original raw footage is 30 minutes and 30gigs large. I took a 15 second snippet and it was an estimated 4gigs. The math just doesn't add up here.
It adds up, as your "RAW" footage is probably using H264 or another MPEG-4 codec to store the video, and FCP wants its footage in either ProRes (can be 100GB for one hour of HD video) or Apple Intermediate Codec (AIC - up to 50GB for one hour of HD footage).
Therefore get another external FW800 HDD (if you have FW800 on your Mac), which you can safely format in "HFS+" via Disk Utility, or format your existing external HDD with "HFS+", if possible as formatting will erase the contents of the HDD.
Maybe you can partition it though.

those are the same until you get to the 40GB 4G. I believe that one gets thicker. Not sure about the 30 GB The 30GB and 40GB 3G are the same thickness, (0.11" thicker than the 10/15/20) and the 40GB 4G is just a touch thinner.
However, Mactracker lists the 10/15/20GB 3G as 0.62"/15.7mm, and the 20GB 4G as 0.57"/15.7mm. That just doesn't seem right...

Thanks to Rower for looking into it...
but I think it was an odd bug between the MacRumors server mail server and .Mac's.
You guys should get a flood of queue'd emails just now... and hopefully no more delays.
People let me know.

Both are fine. The best buy I work for doesn't charge any restocking fee on anything, so I assume that all of them are the same. Bring in the receipt and it will make the entire process much quicker.

Hi, that's a nice idea but I have a few questions/feedback..
If I stumbled upon the site I'm not sure I would know what it was for - a more detailed explanation would be useful.
How would you "police" this? Clearly this is professionals looking for other professionals to do work. How do you propose people get paid for their work? Or is it supposed to be free?
I'm not sure the forum format is the bast way to go - how about just a "post my project" type thing? Check out somewhere like crowdSpring to get an idea of what I mean (but without the spec work)

Well the 30 minute battery life wouldn't do for me, especially without the option to have extra battery packs. I'm considering buying a spare Flip while I still can.

My site, for reference, perhaps not safe for prudes;
http://www.hisdarknostalgia.com
Issue: I have my files hosted on another site, http://www.violetsandvenom.com/images/header.htm for the header.
I can not, for the life of me, get <base href="/" to point my images to the server. I have temporarily put up an iframe, but would like to get rid of that if anyone can help solve this.
Thanks.
Just hoping to find an alternative to base href all together really - but have no idea which way to look...

What the seller probably meant is that it won't actually boot in a standard Windows PC, which would be correct.
But a Mac Pro running Windows via Bootcamp, different story.

Hi!
I am creting a Webappication which is able to throw out the content in different DOCTYPES.
Whe unsing the HTML-Template, the rendered Menu is just some purple blocks. When using the XHTML-Template, the buttons are very fine. The generated page looks great with any template in any other browser (KHTML, Safari, Geck, IE 5.0 - 7beta, iCab...)
The last and only Problem is the purple blocks in the menu. Maybe anyone here has had a similar problem??
The Menu is created with the following code (abridged):
HTML:
<td class='menuitem'><a class='menuitem'><img ...></a></td>
CSS:
td.menuitem
