yeah whats the real difference between magnesium and aluminum?
Magnesium is flamible and burns VERY bright.
I can see it now: Do not smoke while using iPod.

I wouldn't mind seeing a change in the Macbook line from the white plastic to a dark cf or lm, or whatever like the current menu bar on Apple's website. Right now the MB is lagging behind both the MBA and MBP. I don't really know what it does I say ax the super drive, put in more storage and have a 14.5 inch and 16.7 inch models to fill the gap between MBPs with a Core i3 processor and integrated graphics starting at $799. Keep it thin and light w/ USB 3.0 and lots of battery like the MBA. That would be perfect for those of use who just use the internet, music, and right lots of papers.

Are people as outraged by this leak as I am? I can't believe it. He just stole Steve's thunder at a later secret event. This will end up costing Apple the element of surprise and the impact of a special Steve announcement. We've got to punish Lion's Gate somehow. We need to boycott all of their films and show that they cannot mess with Apple. The mothership is under attack! Who's with me?

Is it me, or are the decimal points on the photo for "Capacity" and "Available" both commas?
In some countries commas are used in place of decimal points.

For me (and from what it sounds like, most of you), this will have limited functionality, as I already have all my music backed up on my terabytes of storage.
My mother-in-law however, doesn't even own a computer, she has an iPad and is completely in love with it. She bought the 16GB version last year and has never been happier. Except, she does not have iTunes installed anywhere so cant back up her files. Now, when she buys a TV show (cant rent them here in Canada), she is forced to delete something that she has previously purchased. If Apple could just allow re-downloads of something you have already purchased, this would be huge. It would remove the need for a computer entirely for a lot of people that are perfectly happy getting buy with just an iPad or iPod Touch. Even if this was WiFi only, it would still have a significant value for a lot of people.

August 17, 2006 Cupertino, CA: In a surprise press release late this afternoon Apple Computer announced it's purchase of Lions Gate Films. Without delay, former President Steven Beeks was removed from his position placed in shackles, stripped to his boxer shorts and displayed prominently of the official "Apple Ridicule Platform" located conveniently in the parking lot at 1 Infinite Loop. Steve Jobs was unavailable for comment, but was seen laughing, choking down a small bowl of low calorie pescaterian chowder.
... the official "Apple Ridicule Platform."
He, he. But I thought the platform was in the aquarium attached to Steve's office? :p

I thought/think it conceivable they would release a higher-priced Retina version of the iPad 2 just prior to the holidays to keep ahead of the competition. This is assuming the A5 SOC has the horsepower for it, and that the screens are available in high enough quantities.
What competition? It was never conceivable, and only complete amateurs who are completely removed from any knowledge of Apples own trends thought it possible.

I realize where you're coming from.
Disks nowadays are definitely made from the same primary components (enterprise models used to provide different mechanicals, such as spindle motors and servos). But there are some differences (whether they matter or not is debatable, such as "cherry picked platters" and additional sensors), but as you mention, the firmware is significant in some cases (definitely with hardware RAID cards).
I'll believe that when I see a study that shows that, but with 200,000 disks in the Google & CMU studies showing, and Netapp's rep stating that theres not a reliability advantage, I think I'll save the extra cash unless I know I need to outlay it.
I'm not convinced of the previous heat arguments (sudden death; but in general with electronics, heat over time tends to have a negative effect on overall lifespan). As per vibration, I'm a bit torn (multiple arrays in the same enclosure and no rubber dampening, I'm concerned that the vibration could be a problem on the newer disk types as the platter densities are high and the heads ride closer to the surface than past disk designs - I did note that the articles have some age to them, and don't reflect disks made in the last few years; article is 4 years old).
If you check out the Google study (http://labs.google.com/papers/disk_failures.pdf) theres a pretty clear correlation of heat, both too high and too low, to drive failure trends.
Then you're talking about a RAID card, enclosures, and enterprise disks (need them for the recovery time settings), where the disks alone would eat the majority of the budget ($8100 of it). That would leave $1900 for card/s and enclosures (SAS expander for backup disks and 1:1 port/disk ratio for the primary pool would likely be more cost effective).
Linux is a compromise, but based on the stated budget, it seems to be the way to go.
Sans Digital AS316X2HA, 16 disk RAID 6 DAS, $3295 @ Amazon including a RAID card and all cables, redundant power supplies. 14x Hitachi 0S03230's gives you 30 TB RAID-6 with 2 hot spares, and you still have 2 empty drive bays for expansion. Grand total $5255, and you can get a second identical setup for backup and you're only $510 over the $10k budget.
Run Mac native afpdserver and it will humiliate the Linux box performance-wise while being easier to maintain and integrate. Netatalk is great, but afpd has some serious performance issues, and avahi has some stability issues in my experience.

I would be surprised to see 10.5 before spring 07.
Is that northern hemisphere spring or southern hemisphere spring? :p
I don't actually expect it before March '07 either. All this "announce in Jan to steal Vista's thunder" nonsense is simply wishful thinking. Vista has no real thunder to steal, anyway. I don't think you see throngs of people lining up the night before outside of CompUSA stores to buy that thing. Microsoft will make its share of money off it, to be sure, but it won't be the event that say Windows 95 was.

Outlook has constantly crashed, failed to send messages and has been super slow syncing with our exchange server. I moved all my stuff over to Mail and iCal for the time being. I may give SP1 a chance though.

eveything there looks like stuff that's already available. except that disk with the big black X on it. big black X's always lead to good news.
i seriously effing hope it's more than improvements to file sync'ing, spotlight, and virtual desktops. that's pathetic. we need a revolutionary OS revision.
hasn't every new OS be revolutionary?

Why did you have to remind me?
Because you were becoming irrationally exuberant - I thought that you needed some balance ;) .
I also wonder about this Intel diagram:
http://www.geekwithlaptop.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/03/intel-thunderbolt-3.jpg(click to enlarge)
If this applies to the Imac TBolt ports, then the two TBolt ports in fact share bandwidth from the single PCIe x4 connection. The combined max throughput of the two ports would be no better than that of a single TBolt port.
Another moot point, though, since no TBolt devices can be purchased.

Update: Yesterday everything worked with my DVD drive - today everything is the same as before! It won't play some of my DVDs - how strange is that? It seems that the reset made the DVD drive accept DVDs again, but only for a limited time :-(
Does anybody else in this forum have the same problem? Is there any soft fix, or does my MBP have to get ripped apart and receive new parts?

I think Apple blew it with the new iPod Shuffle. They should have kept the old form factor but put in a small LCD display to show song titles and elapsed time.

have you ever set-up two cards like Nvidia Quadro 4000's?
Ive been thinking of testing out the 5870 and 4000 on one box for a cheap DIT station but havent found time to test :P
